The Importance of High-Performance Air Conditioning Systems for the Dairy Industry

Temperature and air quality control are critical in dairy production. From filling rooms to packaging and storage areas, maintaining stable, hygienic conditions isn’t just good practice—it’s a regulatory and product integrity requirement. At Penmann, we’ve worked with numerous dairy processors across the UK, delivering bespoke ventilation and cooling systems that safeguard product quality, improve working conditions, and help maintain compliance with food safety standards.

One of the biggest challenges in the dairy sector is managing heat load while avoiding the formation of condensation and microbial growth. High humidity and temperature variations can compromise hygiene and shorten shelf life, particularly in production areas where products are exposed. A well-designed commercial air conditioning system can resolve these risks by delivering accurate temperature control, regulated airflow, and the right level of humidity throughout the production cycle.

For many facilities, maintaining temperatures below 15°C in filling or processing zones is a key requirement—often with a narrower target of around 10°C to support shelf life and compliance. However, this needs to be achieved efficiently and without creating cold draughts or uneven airflow that might disrupt operations or employee comfort.

At Penmann, we engineer our systems to achieve this balance. In a recent project for a UK dairy client, we designed an external air handling unit (AHU) integrated with chilled water cooling coils fed by a glycol-based process chiller. The system delivered a total cooling capacity of 68kW, carefully matched to the room’s calculated heat gains from machinery, lighting and occupancy. High-performance filtration and strategically placed air sock ducting helped distribute low-velocity air evenly across the space, minimising hotspots and ensuring consistent performance.

What sets a high-performance air conditioning system apart is its ability to deliver reliable results over time. That means more than just installing quality components. It involves selecting the correct fan systems, specifying ductwork that supports hygienic cleaning, and designing control panels that allow for flexibility and adjustment as conditions shift throughout the year.

Fresh air intake is also critical. Positive room pressurisation achieved through carefully managed fresh air volumes helps prevent contaminants from entering sensitive production zones. This is especially important in older buildings or during periods of high external humidity, where poor pressurisation can lead to unwanted infiltration and condensation.

For many dairies, capital investment in new HVAC systems may not always be possible in one phase. That’s why we offer flexible project staging, complete design and build services, and ongoing maintenance and support to ensure systems continue to operate efficiently for years to come. All our projects are designed with long-term compliance and energy performance in mind.

If you’re planning a new filling line, expanding your facility, or upgrading outdated air handling equipment, we’d be happy to talk. Our in-house team understands the pressures of modern dairy production, and we pride ourselves on delivering tailored climate control systems that are built to perform.
