Case Study
Temporary Cooling Solution for Premier Foods
Overview
Client: Premier Foods in Ashford, UK
Industry: Food Manufacturing
Presence: Temporary Cooling and Chiller Hire
Project Overview: Penmann delivered a temporary cooling solution for Premier Foods in Ashford, supporting both the Line T area and Soups production line with tailored systems. The project ensured stable temperatures, reliable performance, and uninterrupted production throughout the hire period.
Penmann was appointed to deliver a temporary cooling solution for Premier Foods at their Ashford facility, supporting both the Line T production area and the Soups process line.
The requirement formed part of a planned operational need to maintain stable temperature conditions across two separate process areas, each with different cooling demands. Maintaining consistent temperatures was essential to support production performance, protect product quality and ensure reliable operation during the hire period. Penmann provided a complete temporary cooling solution, incorporating air conditioning and process chiller systems, along with full installation, commissioning and removal at the end of the project.
The Challenge
The project required two distinct cooling solutions operating simultaneously within the same facility. The Line T production area required high-capacity air conditioning to manage heat loads generated during processing, while the Soups line required a dedicated process cooling system to support production stability. The solution needed to be installed efficiently, operate reliably over an extended period and integrate with the existing site infrastructure without disrupting ongoing operations.
In addition, all equipment had to be delivered, installed and commissioned within a defined timeframe, ensuring that production schedules were maintained.
Penmann’s Solution
Penmann designed and delivered a tailored temporary cooling solution to meet the specific requirements of both areas.
Line T – High Capacity Air Conditioning
For the Line T production area, Penmann supplied a 300 kW air conditioning hire package designed to manage the higher heat loads associated with this part of the facility.
The system included:
- 1 x NR375 air-cooled chiller
- 6 x 50 kW fan coil units (FCUs)
- Flexible chilled water hose connections
- Power distribution cabling to support all equipment
The fan coil units were strategically positioned to ensure effective airflow distribution across the production area. This approach allowed the cooling load to be spread evenly, preventing localised hotspots and maintaining a consistent internal temperature.
The NR375 chiller provided the central cooling source, delivering chilled water to each FCU and ensuring stable performance throughout the duration of the hire.
Soups Line – Dedicated Process Cooling
For the Soups production line, Penmann supplied a 120 kW chiller system, designed to provide targeted process cooling where it was required most.
The system included:
- 1 x NR-120 kW air-cooled chiller
- Flexible hose connections and adapters for integration with existing pipework
- Dedicated power supply cabling
This standalone system ensured that the Soups line operated independently from the Line T cooling system, allowing both areas to maintain the required conditions without impacting each other.
Installation and Delivery
Penmann delivered all equipment to site in a coordinated programme, ensuring that both systems could be installed efficiently and within the required timeframe.
Our engineering team carried out the full installation, including positioning of equipment, connection of pipework and cabling, and integration with the existing systems. Careful planning ensured that disruption to production was kept to a minimum throughout the installation process. Following installation, both systems were fully commissioned to ensure that they were operating correctly and delivering the required cooling performance.
Performance and Results
The temporary cooling solution successfully maintained stable temperature conditions across both the Line T and Soups production areas throughout the hire period.
The distributed air conditioning system on Line T ensured consistent airflow and temperature control, supporting both process performance and working conditions. The dedicated chiller on the Soups line provided reliable process cooling, allowing production to continue without interruption.
By delivering two tailored solutions within a single project, Penmann ensured that each area received the level of cooling required, without compromise.
Key Benefits
Targeted Cooling Solutions
Separate systems for Line T and the Soups line ensured that each area received the correct level of cooling based on its specific requirements.
Reliable Performance
Both systems operated consistently throughout the hire period, supporting production and maintaining stable conditions.
Efficient Installation
Coordinated delivery and chiller installation allowed both systems to be brought online quickly, minimising disruption to operations.
Flexible Approach
The use of temporary equipment provided the flexibility to meet short-term requirements without the need for permanent infrastructure changes.
Complete Turnkey Delivery
Penmann managed the full process from delivery and installation through to commissioning and final removal of equipment.
Conclusion
This project demonstrates Penmann’s ability to deliver effective temporary cooling solutions for complex food manufacturing environments. By combining high-capacity air conditioning with dedicated process cooling, Penmann provided a reliable and flexible solution tailored to the needs of Premier Foods. The successful delivery of both systems ensured that production continued without disruption, highlighting the value of well-planned temporary cooling strategies within industrial settings.
