Case Study
Upgraded ventilation system at the Westmill spice blending room
Overview
Client: Westmill Foods
Industry: Food
Project Overview: Economic ventilation solution maintains a positive pressure to the area
Outcomes
- Positive pressure maintained throughout the area
- Energy savings through combined ambient external air and internal air avoided installation of new heating medium
- Innovative sock distribution system to deliver air to the mezzanine
- Project delivered on time and on budget
Challenges
As part of their strategic development Westmill wanted to relocate their spices packing process from Trafford Park Manchester to their Enfield Factory. Penmann has worked with Westmill before and we were pleased to be commissioned once more to design a ventilation system that would economically ventilate the new purpose-built production space in Enfield and also maintain a positive pressure to the area.
Solutions
The system was designed to operate using external, ambient air during the summer months and then to draw air internally during the winter therefore reducing costs on installing a heating medium. It was also required to integrate with the new dust extract system to ensure the correct air balance. Air needed to be distributed to circulate both above and below the new mezzanine platform. A sock distribution delivered this solution providing displacement air to low level and nozzles in the socks would distribute air to the mezzanine.
Conclusion
The upgraded ventilation system at Westmill’s spice blending room effectively maintains positive pressure throughout the area, ensuring a clean and efficient production environment. The innovative sock distribution system delivers air both above and below the mezzanine, enhancing air circulation and quality. By utilising ambient external air in summer and internal air in winter, the system achieves significant energy savings, avoiding the need for a new heating medium. The project, completed on time and within budget, demonstrates Penmann’s ability to deliver economical and effective ventilation solutions tailored to Westmill’s specific needs.
