Penmann Completes Precision HVAC Upgrade for Nutricia’s FSI Phases 1 & 2 in Liverpool
Penmann has delivered a major HVAC upgrade for Nutricia’s Liverpool facility, supporting the company’s FSI Phase 1 and 2 development works with a fully engineered ventilation and climate control solution designed to meet strict production and hygiene standards.
The project involved the design, supply, installation and commissioning of advanced HVAC systems serving a wide range of civil, Medium Care (MC) and High Care (HC) areas. Working from Nutricia’s approved specifications, Penmann developed a system that ensures precise temperature control, stable airflow patterns, cleanroom-appropriate filtration and correct pressure cascades between critical zones.
A key part of the project included the installation of two new rooftop air handling units. AHU01 supplies fresh air to the civil areas, incorporating heat recovery, G4 and F7 filtration, low-temperature hot water heating and high-efficiency plug fans. Air is distributed through spiral galvanised ductwork routed via risers into the occupied spaces, ensuring a reliable supply of conditioned air for offices, amenities and support rooms. Local DX cassette systems provide supplementary cooling and heating where room-specific temperature control is required.
For the Medium Care and High Care zones, Penmann installed AHU02, designed to serve both changing areas and associated link corridors. This unit incorporates a mixing box for energy efficiency, dual-stage filtration, LTHW heating and a run-around coil heat recovery system. High Care areas require a controlled supply of filtered air under positive pressure, so the Air Handling Unit (AHU) was configured with upgraded filtration up to H13 HEPA level, along with stainless steel ductwork, fabric socks in key spaces and precise control of airflow rates. The system ensures compliant pressurisation hierarchies between civil, MC and HC zones, supporting Nutricia’s stringent hygiene and production requirements.
The project also included the installation of supplementary heating for designated rooms, ventilation improvements for kitchen and wash-up areas, and specialist extract systems for food preparation zones. Temperature-controlled spaces were fitted with DX cassettes linked to outdoor heat pump condensers, providing accurate and efficient cooling and heating.
Control and monitoring are managed through a Trend BMS integrated with Nutricia’s existing site network. This gives engineers full visibility of plant performance, airflow rates, temperatures and system alarms, ensuring that all areas remain within their defined operating limits. Each zone operates under its own control logic according to Nutricia’s technical standards, with fresh air, recirculation and heat recovery working dynamically to minimise energy consumption.
Throughout the project, Penmann’s engineering team delivered full commissioning, verification and performance testing, ensuring all systems met the specified design conditions. The final installation provides Nutricia with a robust and energy-efficient HVAC solution capable of supporting production, hygiene and welfare requirements across both phases of the FSI development.
The successful completion of this work demonstrates Penmann’s continued commitment to delivering high-performance climate and humidity control solutions for the food and nutrition sector. With strong emphasis on compliance, reliability and engineering accuracy, the system now installed at Nutricia’s Liverpool site will support consistent production standards for years to come.
