Penmann Completes Specialist Ventilation Project for New UK Snack Production Facility

Penmann has successfully delivered the full factory ventilation and airflow control package for a major new popcorn production plant in Nuneaton. The project supports a rapidly growing UK snack manufacturer as they expand operations and invest in new production technology at their Warwickshire site.

The new facility required a commercial ventilation strategy capable of managing high heat loads, continuous steam generation, airborne particulates, and the hygiene expectations of a modern food production environment. Penmann was appointed to design, install and commission the complete system for the new line, ensuring controlled working conditions, reliable product quality and full compliance with industry standards.

The production line contained a mix of new and relocated machinery, including conveyor-fed coolers, high-heat processes and multiple point-source emissions. To support efficient operation, Penmann engineered a ventilation solution that stabilised the environment across the cooking, cooling and seasoning areas while protecting workers from heat stress and improving overall air quality.

A key element of the project involved the installation of a source-extraction canopy system positioned above the new cooker. This allowed high-temperature air and steam to be captured at the point of generation, reducing airborne moisture and preventing heat accumulation in the wider production space. Additional local extraction systems were installed at the seasoning and bagging areas to remove particulate matter and support hygiene standards.

Penmann designed a balanced airflow system that included controlled supply air, dedicated extracts and air distribution layouts that avoided turbulence around the production process. All ductwork and components were manufactured to meet food industry hygiene requirements, with easy access for cleaning and maintenance.

The project also addressed the performance of existing infrastructure. Several older extract fans had reached end of life and were replaced with new, high-efficiency units selected to match the revised airflow demand. The upgrade improved energy performance and reduced the risk of unplanned downtime as production volumes increase.

Working alongside the main contractor and equipment suppliers, Penmann delivered the installation within the required programme window, with full commissioning completed ahead of the client’s start-up schedule. The new system is now supporting stable production conditions, improved working comfort and the operational reliability required for high-output snack manufacturing.

This project highlights Penmann’s expertise in designing food-grade ventilation systems that handle complex heat and moisture loads while maintaining environmental control across different process zones. As UK manufacturers continue to expand and modernise their facilities, Penmann remains a trusted partner for ventilation, cooling and environmental engineering solutions.

If your food production site requires improved ventilation, environmental control, humidity control or process extraction, our engineering team is ready to support your next project.
