Penmann Delivers Specialist HVAC Solution for UK Global Snacks Manufacturer

We have recently completed a major HVAC project for a UK global snacks manufacturer at its production facility in Teesside.

The project involved the design and delivery of an HVAC system serving three key areas of the facility: the Ingredients Handling Area, Manufacturing Area and New Pellet Warehouse. As with many industrial HVAC projects, the design needed to account for a number of site-specific technical constraints. One of the main challenges was the limited electrical power available for the new HVAC system, with less than 300kVA available across the project. Our engineering team needed to develop a system that could provide the required heating and cooling performance while remaining within the available electrical capacity.

Designing the HVAC System Around Available Power

The chiller represented the largest electrical load within the proposed HVAC system, so reducing its power requirements was a key consideration throughout the design process.

We designed the system to operate with a relatively high glycol temperature, which allowed the chiller to run more efficiently. Our chiller selection was also based on a maximum summer ambient temperature of 23.1°C, which helped us to reduce the electrical power required by the equipment. Rather than specifying an oversized chiller with significant spare capacity, we selected equipment closely matched to the calculated requirements of the facility. Our engineers also worked closely with three chiller manufacturers to assess the available options and identify the most suitable solution for the project.

Selecting a Heat Pump

Following our technical assessment, we specified a heat pump gall capable of providing heating as well as cooling. This provided an efficient source of heating for the facility without the need to introduce a separate major electrical load.

By considering the heating and cooling requirements as part of the complete HVAC system design, we were able to develop a solution that remained within the site’s electrical limitations while meeting the operating requirements of the Ingredients Handling Area, Manufacturing Area and New Pellet Warehouse.

Working Closely with the Project Team

Successful industrial HVAC projects require close communication between everyone involved in the design, specification and delivery process.

Throughout the project, we worked with the client’s project team and equipment manufacturers to assess electrical capacity, process requirements, building conditions and equipment performance. This collaborative approach allowed us to make informed decisions at each stage of the project and develop an HVAC system based on the actual requirements of the facility.

For us, this project demonstrates the value of detailed engineering input at the earliest stages of an industrial HVAC project. Limited electrical capacity presented a significant challenge, but by carefully assessing system temperatures, chiller performance and equipment selection, we were able to develop a suitable solution.

Supporting the UK Food Manufacturing Industry

At Penmann, we have extensive experience working with food and beverage manufacturers across the UK. We understand that HVAC systems within food production and processing facilities must meet specific operational requirements. Temperature control, production processes, electrical capacity, existing infrastructure and future demands can all influence the final system design.

Our team works closely with clients to understand these requirements before developing and delivering industrial HVAC systems based on the specific conditions of each site.

This latest project for a UK global snacks manufacturer adds to our experience of delivering specialist HVAC solutions for major food production facilities. If you are planning an industrial HVAC project or need support with heating, cooling or ventilation requirements at your facility, contact the Penmann team to discuss your project.
