The team is making great progress following the calculation of our carbon footprint
In our March update on Green Team activities we reported on how we had calculated our Carbon Footprint for 2020. Following this, we have captured data for the year 2021.
Now we can move on to the next stages of our plan:
• Set up an Environmental Management System (EMS)
• Set targets for reducing our environmental impact
• Taken action and planned other actions to achieve these
The EMS complements the international standard ISO 14001; should the business want to go for accreditation the foundation and the building blocks will already be in place to do so. The EMS mainly comprises of targets based off data, compliance with standards, annual reviews for improvement, training and communication and assessing risks and opportunities.
It also significantly improves Penmann’s ability to target and reduce the CO2 emissions where possible, in a methodical manner with respect to time.
The data that has been collected establishing our carbon footprint for the year 2020 and 2021 gives us a good datum to work from. This enables us to make sound choices and actions with respect to the work we do. The data collected falls within Scope 1,2 and 3.
The former scope 1&2 falls within Highfield, our HQ offices, i.e. utilities and commuting, the use of hybrid vehicle and charging them at work. The latter, scope 3 falls into the business process from tender to project phase. This can be categorised into travelling to site for completing projects and site visits at tender stage. Also, it includes transport and distribution for plant equipment, formed sheet metal and pipework that the business uses to complete the objectives of a project.
In conclusion, through the EMS we can:
- Improve our environmental performance in scope 1, 2 & 3
- Continually improve our carbon footprint using data backed targets and an ongoing lifecycle of capturing the work/ consumption that we do as a business
- Take action wherever we can
